Any interest in an Ethereal Plane server?

Post by Apandapion »

I had some thoughts on implementation yesterday.

Ethereal is a nice Idea, but I would rather see an Astral Plane Server.

Reason: Ethereal links Prime to the Inner Elemental planes. The Astral links Primes with the Outerplanes. We have 0 Inner plane servers, but 5 of 13 Outerplanar servers.

Just my 2 cents,

The problem is, of course, that you walk through the ethereal and fly through the astral. Between that and silver cord mechanics, I see the astral as being almost unrenderable in the NWN engine, wheras one could do a fairly good approximation of the ethereal.

The navigation system I have in mind, however, would work well for either.

I think it would add an interesting diminsion to the CoPaP system to have a server that is the ethereal plane.

I say go for it (:

clink the link on the front page and get the ball rolling (:

I might tinker around with it, considering that being player coordinator hasn't generated much work for me... I'll probably rig a test module and try to get my travel code to work.

Actually Astral is not suppose to link with the Inner planes, that's a MotP3.0 mess up.

The MotP 3rd edition if a waste of paper. I have seen more eratta on that book alone over all the 3 core books....

the connectons are

Outerplanes(top layer only) <--> Astral <--> Prime Material <--> Ethereal <--> Inner Planes

Added in 3rd edition is the "Shadow plane" which connects to all Prime material worlds.

Regardless the Outler Planes servers are all using the 2nd edition rules from the Planescape campaign setting.

Apandapion, I didn't want to sound like I was discouraging you from makeing a non-Prime server, or making any server for that matter. I would love to see another non-prime server go up. :)

My recommendation for an Astral server was based on the fact you would have a lot more activity, than the Ethereal. Well most likely. :?

But I say go for what makes you happy. 8)

ok.. first edition MotP doesn't say anything about ethreal to outer or astral to inner.. now was it an error, or an upgrade in 3rd MotP.

Its an error there is an errata about it on the WotC site someplace (man that site is messy (: )

I was looking over some of the second edition matieral on the astral plane and found some interesting things that could be done coding wise to simulate some of the mechanic rules of that setting. Some of these include temporarily changing certain stats, making penlaties on ranged weapons for non-natives, and perhaps some sort of speed/fighting drift code to simulate wild ass space battles.

I am not well-versed in NWscript, but if someone is interested in this sort of code for astral areas on their respective server, I might have a try at coding some of it.

My primary compunction against doing the astral myself is that I know that I can not do it justice visually. To create the illusion of space necessary for the astral is beyond a toolset novice, which I am. But the 'trackless space' travel code I'm working on occasionally might fit for the astral as well, and if you are thinking seriously about doing the Astral I can send you the code if I get anywhere with it.

I am curious to what you mean by trackless space travel code, what do you plan on having this do? Is it much like... the abyss lost plains traveling code?

I haven't spent enough time on the lost plains to know the answer to that question. I don't think so.
